About CIEE

Founded in 1947, CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange is a non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to helping people gain understanding, acquire knowledge, and develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world. The organization is one of the world’s leading operators of international educational exchange programs with two main divisions; (1) International Study Programs providing education abroad programs for U.S. students and faculty and (2) the Exchanges division providing work and internships for international students coming to the United States (i.e. the Work & Travel program, processed in CR by GTS). CIEE in Prague

CIEE, in cooperation with FF UK (Faculty of Arts/Filozofická Fakulta) and UJOP UK (Ústav jazykové a odborné přípravy), brings 90 to 120 U.S. students to Charles University from colleges and universities across the United States each semester. CIEE students come from U.S. universities that are members of the CIEE Academic Consortium, including institutions such as Georgetown, Cornell, Penn State, UCLA, University of Chicago, University of Southern California, University of Colorado-Boulder and many others. The majority of CIEE participants in Prague specialize in such fields as political science, cinema studies, history, English, business, economics, art and social science.

Academic Opportunities for Charles University students

to gain knowledge

Bridging Perspectives Program

Charles University (CU) students have the opportunity to take courses in English leading towards a CIEE Certificate of Completion in Bridging Perspectives Program. Interested and selected CU students enroll in CIEE courses based on their interests during the fall, spring or summer term and add an international dimension to their CU degree. Participants experience and gain insight into academic structures concomitant with the U.S. university system and U.S. cultural environment, while earning credentials for their resume and/or their future academic pursuits.

Guest Lectures

CIEE welcomes a wide variety of guest lecturers each term. We invite distinguished speakers to the CIEE Study Center to present and discuss issues on topics from political science and economics to art and religion. Everyone is welcome to attend our guest lectures, usually held on Mondays between 12:15 - 13:15. Contact us directly for details and current schedule of guest lectures.

Czech Buddies and Flat Buddies

CU students have an excellent opportunity to develop expertise important for succeeding in a globally interdependent world and practice leadership skills, mentoring, English language and cross-cultural communication by participating in the CIEE Czech Buddies program or Flat Buddies Program (see details bellow).

Families and Friends Program

CIEE provides excellent opportunities to expand knowledge of the U.S. and other cultures and develop cross-cultural communication skills. Czech people interested in the program meet with university students from the U.S. studying at CU several times during the term for activities of mutual interest (dinner, sporting events, museum visits, conversations about cultural differences in a local cafe, etc.). This program not only broadens perspectives and introduces concepts of tolerance and international community to everyone, helps to improve language skills of both parties but is also a lot of fun!

Library

CIEE library with focus on Czech, Central and Eastern Europe materials in English is open to all CU community with its 4000 holdings (books, CDs, DVD&VHS). Students may use our library to read books and research anytime during the open hours. CIEE and students enrolled in CIEE courses may also check books out. Library open hours are Monday – Thursday, 8am – 7pm, Friday, 8am - 5pm

Work-Study Opportunities for CU students

….to gain experience

Czech Buddies Program

“Buddies” (in North American slang meaning friends) are Czech students interested in becoming friends with CIEE students and introducing them to the local community, academia, and culture. One does not need to be a specialist in order to become a Czech Buddy, all you have to possess is a willingness and interest in meeting and assisting U.S. students in integrating in local culture! Become an “Orientation Buddy” and show U.S. students around Prague and CU at the beginning of the semester, or a “Semester Buddy” and prepare activities of your choice (sporting events, hiking trips, discussions, etc.) throughout the term. CIEE offers Buddies a financial reward for their time and efforts.

Flat Buddies Program

Flat buddy is a Charles University student who lives with CIEE students and shares day to day issues, helps to understand local cultural norms and standards, and assists in getting immersed into the Czech culture and Charles University student life. Flat Buddies also organize various extracurricular activities for CIEE students and receive subsidized accommodation in CIEE administered apartments.

House a Study Abroad Student (Homestays)

Czech families may “adopt” a CIEE university student from the U.S. for a semester. Under this program, CIEE students are placed in a Czech family household where they live during their period of stay in the Czech Republic. This is a wonderful opportunity for Czech families to include a native English speaker into their family and to learn more about a different culture. This program is particularly interesting for families with children or university students. CIEE offers families a financial reward for offering students room-and-board and for their efforts of accepting students into their family for a term.

Extra-curricular Activities for CU students

to have fun while learning

Culture and Sporting Events

CIEE organizes activities/events of a smaller and very friendly sort throughout the semester. All CU students are more than welcome to join us for these activities. Some of our past successful activities include Czech cooking lessons, sports tournaments, debates, paddle boating, ski trips, etc. Please contact us for current schedule of activities on Externí odkaz iskenderija@ciee.org

Field Trips and Excursions

Every semester, CIEE offers its students various academic field trips to different parts of the Czech Republic led by CIEE faculty members. CIEE welcomes all CU students, who cooperate with CIEE, on these trips (for no charge) based on space availability. Our usual destinations include Terezin, Plzeň, Nelahozeves, Moravia, Český Krumlov and other destinations around the Czech Republic. Please contact Eva Tomišková at Externí odkaz etomiskova@ciee.org for current schedule of trips and excursions

Volunteering Program – assistance to CU institutions and professors

to help and integrate

One of the CIEE program goals is to expand opportunities for cultural immersion as well as practical and professional skills for our participants. Our students take part in various volunteer activities and assist in building Czech civil society. So far, CIEE students have taught English, assisted teachers in classes, helped with Internet research, English correspondence, proofreading and editing texts. They have also helped with developing programs and have contributed time to people with special needs and the elderly. By working with students of different cultural and working backgrounds, companies and organizations gain an international perspective and receive helping hands in their work from dedicated U.S. students. CIEE students are often a source of original ideas, many of which have been welcomed and integrated into the host organization/institution environment. Students usually visit their volunteer placements once a week for 1-2 hours for a period of 2-3 months, and they do so without any expectation of financial reward. If you are interested in having a CIEE student work for you as a volunteer, do not hesitate to contact Eva Tomišková on Externí odkaz etomiskova@ciee.org.
